Esine is located at the beginning of Valgrigna, a side valley of Valle Camonica.
It is 60 km away from Brescia, the provincial capital, 60 km from the tourist resorts of Ponte di Legno (access, via Passo Tonale, to Trentino) and Aprica (access to Valtellina), 25 km from the slopes of Monte Campione, 15 km from those of the Altopiano del Sole in Borno, and 9 km from the Terme di Boario.
Since 1992, it has been the location of the Valle Camonica hospital.
How to get there:
By car and bus: from Milan (A4 motorway) and Bergamo with the SS42; from Brescia with the SS510 and SS42.
By train: from Brescia with the Brescia-Iseo-Edolo line of the Ferrovie Nord, stopping at Cogno-Esine (the village is about 1 km away).
Historical Notes:
In ancient times, the village was built on the hill of SS. Trinità because the inhabitants of Esine feared the Grigna stream, which often overflowed (flood of 1600).
In the Middle Ages, the hill housed a Lombard fortress castle, of which only some parts of the perimeter walls remain today.
The church that stands there (SS. Trinità) was originally reserved for the lord of the castle and his family.
The village later expanded on both the right and left banks of the Grigna. In the historic center, one can still admire the tower of the Federici family, which dates back to the 12th-13th century. It has a square plan with a simple stone portal, and it was the stronghold of the castle.
